The next morning, when I woke before him, I stayed right there in the bed with him. Okay, I snuck out to use the bathroom, but then I got back in, sliding carefully close so as not to wake him. He did wake eventually; the sounds outside got too loud even for his deep sleep, and one particularly loud car honk made him scrunch up his nose and give a groan.

I held him even tighter then, just to make sure that when the memories of the day before came through, he wouldn’t feel alone.

I could tell when reality hit. He went rigid in my arms, let out a sharp breath, and then gave a shudder. “Miller,” I said after a second. I’d almost said Good morning. But how could any morning be good for him from now on? “Miller,” I said again when he didn’t reply. And then: “Sweetheart?”

My heart bounced at my daring, and he turned over in my arms. “JJ?” He knuckled at his eyes. “What time is it?”

“It’s late. But you take the time you need.”

His mouth sagged down and his eyes closed again. “What am I supposed to do now?” he muttered. “What am I…” When his eyes opened, I could see a flood of despair start to darken them.

I reached up and cupped his face. “First,” I said softly, “we set you up with a burner phone and you check to see if your parents have been in touch. After that, we’ll get some food into you. One step at a time. Deal?”

It took a second, but he nodded.
